A planet does not reverse its orbit when it appears retrograde. The apparent backward movement is a change in viewing geometry produced by the relative motion of Earth and the other planet. The effect is similar to watching a slower vehicle appear to move backward when your vehicle passes it.
Astrological traditions developed symbolic meanings around these visible cycles. Keeping the astronomical observation separate from the symbolic interpretation prevents unnecessary fear.
Why Mercury gets the attention
Mercury retrogrades several times a year and is associated in astrology with communication, movement, commerce and coordination. Astrologers often use the period to review plans, revisit conversations and notice weak systems. That can be a helpful reflective practice, but it is not evidence that every delayed email, broken device or disagreement was caused by a planet.
A better way to use the cycle
Instead of cancelling life, add margin. Confirm important details, back up files, read contracts carefully and leave extra travel time when circumstances call for it. These are sound practices during any busy period. The symbolic calendar can act as a reminder without becoming an excuse or a source of anxiety.
Natal retrogrades
A retrograde planet in a birth chart is often interpreted as a function processed inwardly or developed through revision. It should not be labelled defective. The whole chart matters: sign, house, aspects, condition and the person's actual experience. Two people with the same retrograde planet can express it very differently.
What astrology cannot establish
Astrology is not scientifically established as a method for predicting individual events. A retrograde cycle cannot diagnose illness, determine investment outcomes or prove what another person will do. Use it as a structured language for observation and planning, while making consequential decisions with appropriate evidence and professional advice.
