Awakening Your Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

Your crown chakra is located at the very crown of your head or just above it. The crown, or Sahasrara chakra, is the highest of all the chakras and the one from which all the others emanate. The crown chakra governs union with the Divine, and is often represented in religious iconography as a halo. In the practice of kundalini yoga, the energy serpent is released from the base or root chakra and then consciously moved through all seven chakras for the expressed purpose of union with the Divine, or ’samadhi’ as it is called in the yogic tradition. Anything associated with prayer or meditation will activate and awaken your crown chakra. This chakra is associated with pure light. The element most closely associated with the crown chakra is the diamond. Few people ever experience direct union with God in a lifetime, which isn’t to say you shouldn’t strive for this, but it does mean you should be patient with yourself and realistic. Simply feeding your spirituality with any meditations, prayers, readings, or practices that keep you centered in the NOW will activate your crown chakra. Anything that puts you in the realm of pure experience such as a walk in nature or a silent retreat will keep you in touch with this higher part of yourself. An activated crown chakra enables you to see the unity in all things, God in all things, and God in your higher Self.

The Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

The seventh and highest of the chakras is located at the crown of the human head or just above it and is called the Sahasrara or crown chakra. Often referred to as the thousand petaled lotus, the crown chakra is the most subtle of all chakras and is the one from which all the other lower chakras emanate. The crown chakra is the chakra associated with pure consciousness and union with the Divine. The crown chakra represents one’s connection with one’s physical or birth father as well as one’s heavenly father. The color associated with the crown chakra is violet, and the element is inner light. Physically the crown chakra relates to the pineal gland, the brain, the top of the head, and the entire nervous system. The crown chakra enables the individual to see him or herself as creating the Universe and being connected to the created Universe. Imbalance in the crown chakra can show up in the physical body as headaches, photosensitivity, mental illness, schizophrenia, confusion, neuralgia, nervous disorders, epilepsy, skin rashes, and coordination problems. Qualities associated with a well-balanced crown chakra are reverence for life, self-sacrifice in the service of others, idealism, and a gift for seeing the appropriate path to growth of the higher self. When chakra energy is triggered during kundalini yoga, the crown chakra is the point at which Divine union occurs. Energy literally rushes up the spine through all seven chakras and exits the body into the Divine through the crown chakra. This experience of union is called samadhi in Sanskrit.
