Problems Associated With the Root Chakra

Often, certain diseases and emotional patterns cluster together. This doesn’t mean one causes the other, but it can mean that there is a blockage or a problem with overactivity in an energy center. Each energy center has certain specific problems associated with it, beginning with the fundamental or ‘grounding’ root chakra. Located in the area of the perineum or pelvic floor at the base of the spine, the root chakra is associated with our most basic feelings of security and sustenance. Problems or blockages in this area can show up as feeling of insecurity or as anxiety disorders. Relationships with food are associated with this chakra as are eating disorders and other nervous disorders related to feelings of lack of personal safety or self-worth. Our relationship with our mother is connected to the root chakra, since that relationship provides our first feeling of security and nurture, so blockages can show up as problems relating to or with our own physical mothers. A total lack of grounding or awareness of one’s place in the physical world also can show up with a root chakra blockage, as can overly dependent behavior, codependence, and other very basic relationship problems centering on dependency issues. Diseases that appear with these emotional problems include intestinal distress and/or constipation, and medical problems with the legs, feet and lower extremities.

Awakening Your Root Chakra

The pelvic floor or perineal area of the human body is the locus of the Muladhara or Root chakra, the energy center that grounds us, connects us to the earth, and is responsible for our feelings of security and for meeting our most basic physical needs. A healthy root chakra leaves a person feeling grounded, cared for, and safe. Many normal life events, such as job change, divorce, or the death of a parent, can shake this sense of basic security. When that happens, it can help to do things that open the Root chakra. Using the color red, which is the color associated with this chakra, in your environment and even in your dress can help. So can Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises, familiar to every new mother, are done by simply squeezing the muscles between the genital and rectal area together and holding to a count of three, then repeating that, ten or twenty times in a row. You can do Kegels while sitting in a chair without anyone even knowing you are doing them. Another exercise you can do while sitting is to sit up straight and push down slightly into your feet. You will feel energy actually flow up through your feet, and you will also become more aware of your pelvic floor while doing this. Be aware that it is possible to overactive the Root chakra, so if you do this and being to feel anxious, stop. If however, you are feeling spacey, insecure, or our of focus, doing these small things to open your Root chakra will help ground you.
