Using Color to Balance Feng Shui Elements

The art and science of Feng Shui is related to Chinese astrology in that it is based on calendar cycles, energy directions, and five basic elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Chinese elements do not refer exclusively to matter but rather to subtle basic forms of changing energy. Each element also has a productive and destructive cycle, so that any given element will always be in a process of change somewhere on a never-ending cycle of positive/negative, male/female energy. Each element has certain color associations, and these colors can be used in the home to strengthen the influence of that specific element. Wood corresponds to the colors green and brown. Fire corresponds to red, strong yellow, orange, and purple. Earth corresponds to light yellow, tan, and light brown. Metal corresponds to white and gray. Water corresponds to blue and black. The placement of elemental colors in your home is determined by your ‘bagua’ or energy map. For example, green might be used in the eastern part of a home to promote health and family well-being. Blue is often used in the North area to strengthen and support career plans. Pure white in the West supports creative endeavors. Yellow in the south is used for happy gatherings and sociability. Feng shui is incredibly complex, but as you learn the associations, directions, and elements you will find that color can become a source of peace and balance in your everyday environment.
