The second or spleen chakra is located in the center of the abdomen and is associated with our ability to feel our feelings, and with social ties and intimacy. Depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and lower back pain are all associated with imbalance of the spleen chakra. The color associated with the second chakra is bright orange. Bringing that color into your environment and your dress can help bring balance to your energy. Orange food and drink, orange gemstones, and orange essential oils such as melissa or orange oil will also help to awaken and balance the second chakra. The element of water is also associated with this chakra, so swimming, bathing, water aerobics, and even walks in the rain can help. Being near fountains or large bodies of water will bring relief as well. Any creative new way of expressing yourself will awaken the spleen chakra, especially dance and any other form of creative movement. Yoga is one the very best practices for awakening the spleen chakra and for bringing all seven chakras into balance. Yoga is gentle and can be practiced at any age by anyone in any state of health. If you can do only one physical exercise and nothing else, it should be yoga. You will notice improvement in how you feel and move almost immediately after beginning yoga practice, and the benefits will grow over time.

The pelvic floor or perineal area of the human body is the locus of the Muladhara or Root chakra, the energy center that grounds us, connects us to the earth, and is responsible for our feelings of security and for meeting our most basic physical needs. A healthy root chakra leaves a person feeling grounded, cared for, and safe. Many normal life events, such as job change, divorce, or the death of a parent, can shake this sense of basic security. When that happens, it can help to do things that open the Root chakra. Using the color red, which is the color associated with this chakra, in your environment and even in your dress can help. So can Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises, familiar to every new mother, are done by simply squeezing the muscles between the genital and rectal area together and holding to a count of three, then repeating that, ten or twenty times in a row. You can do Kegels while sitting in a chair without anyone even knowing you are doing them. Another exercise you can do while sitting is to sit up straight and push down slightly into your feet. You will feel energy actually flow up through your feet, and you will also become more aware of your pelvic floor while doing this. Be aware that it is possible to overactive the Root chakra, so if you do this and being to feel anxious, stop. If however, you are feeling spacey, insecure, or our of focus, doing these small things to open your Root chakra will help ground you.
