The third chakra, also called the Manipura or solar plexus chakra, is located in the center of the abdomen in the area of the solar plexus. It governs ambition, personal power and will, and vitality. The color associated with the third chakra is bright yellow, the element is fire, and the planet is the Sun. An activated third chakra gives a person a healthy ego and solid sense of self. It imparts the ability to act in and on the world around us, and insures a flow of vital energy and enthusiasm. A good way to activate the third chakra is to get your energy moving: exercise, run, shout, pound a pillow, anything that gets you physically pumped up will do it. Surround yourself with the color yellow and images of fire, or with actual fire itself: a fireplace, a campfire, a burning yellow candle. Chopping wood is an especially powerful way to activate the third chakra, since it gets the entire upper body in motion and encourages a powerful energy flow. It is possible to overactive the third chakra. Signs of overactivation include arrogance, too much ambition, a ‘bully’ archetype that runs roughshod over the needs of others, and a tendency toward being self-centered and narcissistic. If these qualities are present, focus on balancing instead of awakening.

The pelvic floor or perineal area of the human body is the locus of the Muladhara or Root chakra, the energy center that grounds us, connects us to the earth, and is responsible for our feelings of security and for meeting our most basic physical needs. A healthy root chakra leaves a person feeling grounded, cared for, and safe. Many normal life events, such as job change, divorce, or the death of a parent, can shake this sense of basic security. When that happens, it can help to do things that open the Root chakra. Using the color red, which is the color associated with this chakra, in your environment and even in your dress can help. So can Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises, familiar to every new mother, are done by simply squeezing the muscles between the genital and rectal area together and holding to a count of three, then repeating that, ten or twenty times in a row. You can do Kegels while sitting in a chair without anyone even knowing you are doing them. Another exercise you can do while sitting is to sit up straight and push down slightly into your feet. You will feel energy actually flow up through your feet, and you will also become more aware of your pelvic floor while doing this. Be aware that it is possible to overactive the Root chakra, so if you do this and being to feel anxious, stop. If however, you are feeling spacey, insecure, or our of focus, doing these small things to open your Root chakra will help ground you.

The sixth chakra is located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows. It is known as the brow chakra or third eye center, and in Sanskrit is called the Ajna chakra. The color associated with the third eye chakra is indigo or deep blue, and the element is inner sound: a sound that is not dependent on outside causes. The third eye chakra is concerned with spirituality, psychic ability, the unconscious, ESP, clairvoyance and clairsentience. The part of the body most associated with the third eye chakra is the pituitary gland and anything related the senses. The ability to see things from a higher perspective than one’s ego is relevant to this chakra, as is taking personal responsibility for one’s life and actions. A person with a balanced third eye chakra acknowledges a responsibility to follow the soul’s path, and listens actively to intuitive personal messages from the unconscious and the spirit. These messages are unique to each person and differ from ‘gut’ feelings in that they are true spiritual insights. Imbalance shows up in scattered thinking, difficulty recognizing and following personal intuition, and a lack of consideration for others. Physical symptoms of sixth chakra imbalance include thyroid imbalances, swollen glands, flu and infectious diseases, sleep problems, learning disorders, hyperactivity, and hormonal problems.
