Awakening Your Ajna or Third Eye Chakra

In the center of your forehead or brow is your Ajna or ‘third eye’ chakra. The third eye chakra governs insight, intuition, and psychic ability. It is the bridge between the spiritual and the material worlds, and teaches us the difference between inner vision, fantasy, and delusion. The third eye chakra enables people to see ghosts and have other kinds of experiences most of us consider to be paranormal. The idea of space applies to the third eye chakra; it is the portal between inner and outer space. The color associated with the third eye chakra is violet. Surrounding yourself with this color, wearing it, or eating foods that are deep blue or purple like blueberries, eggplant, and raspberries will help to activate and awaken the third eye. Any activity that involves visualization or imagination will also activate this chakra. Lucid dreaming, remote viewing, and exercises to test and stimulate ESP will also help to awaken the third eye chakra. Another excellent third eye chakra activity is keeping a dream journal and/or joining a dream group to analyze and interpret your dreams. Become aware of dream imagery is a profoundly useful spiritual exercise that will teach you much about your true Self, your aspirations and fears, and the direction you most need to follow at any given point in your life.

Awakening the Visuddha or Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is related to self-expression, honesting, truth telling, ‘finding one’s own voice’, and creative self-expression. The throat chakra is associated with sound and rhythm and with being able to bridge the world of the spirit and the material world through communication and an effective expression of one’s true self. The color associated with the throat chakra is sky blue, and the element is ether or spirit. To awaken the throat chakra, surround yourself with sky blue colors and focus on issues of communication. Communication involves both listening and speaking. Singing and chanting are especially effective ways to open your throat chakra, as in any kind of rhythmic activity or creative method of self-expression like acting, writing, or reading poetry. Right now a specific form of Hindu practice called kirtan is experiencing a revival in the United States and Europe. Kirtan is a set of ancient Hindu songs and chants designed to literally change one’s level of consciousness. Many kirtan music CDs are available for purchase now at Amazon and other online retailers, and some communities even have local kirtan groups that anyone can join. Chanting kirtan is an excellent way to open your throat chakra, and it has the added benefit of balancing your other chakras as well and leaving you with a feeling of general well-being and good will. For more information on kirtan practice, tapes, and how to get involved, you can visit www.raganiworld.com or Hinduism at About.com.

Awakening Your Anahata or Heart Chakra

The Sanskrit word ‘anahata’ literally means ‘unstruck’ and is used to refer to the heart chakra, and governs love and personal relationships, and the ability to feel universal love. Meditation, yoga, and any activity involving water such as swimming, bathing, or even walking on the shore of a large body of water will all help to awake the heart chakra. The color associated with the heart chakra is brilliant green. Surrounding yourself with this color, or including it in your dress, along with soft pink colors can also help. Few people have a fully awakened heart chakra, but meditation and prayer will help the process along. People with very open heart chakras are often able to heal others. Psychokinetic ability is also associated with a wide open heart chakra. One good meditative technique for opening the heart chakra comes from Tibetan Buddhism. Sit in a quiet place and simple observe your out breath for five or ten minutes. When you feel relaxed, breathe in whatever you perceive as negative in yourself, and on the out breath, breathe out love and warmth. You will find that this technique dispels fear, anger, and all manner of negative emotions quickly. When you are able to practice the technique on yourself, do the same meditation for specific other people, and when you can do that, practice it for universal peace and happiness. Not only will this awaken your heart chakra, it will put more love in the world and into your own personal life.
