The Bagua of The Eight Aspirations

A bagua map is a tool used in feng shui to show how difference sections of a residence relate to different aspects of the inhabitant’s life. The bagua consists of eight basic categories: fame, relationships/marriage, children/creativity, helpful people/travel, career, inner knowledge, family/ancestors/health, and wealth/blessings. Originally the bagua took into consideration surrounding land and landmarks, directions, and the way a home fit into the landscape in determining which areas of the home had good flow of chi energy. The idea of course is to have a good flow of chi in each of the areas that correspond to the eight categories. The bagua of the eight aspirations splits feng shui into two methods: one which uses a bagua compass and lays out the categories according to the four directions, and another which lays out the bagua by orienting everything to the main door. How can both be correct? Many Chinese believe that both cannot be correct, and hence, the bagua of the eight aspirations is sometimes derided as being “Neo Feng Shui” or “Mc Feng Shui.” In its original form, Feng Shui was an incredibly complex art that took many things into account in determining the optimal flow of chi in a house or space and few people understand it in its original form. The bagua of the eight aspirations, confusing as it is, is actually an extreme simplification of the original ancient art.
