The crown or sahasrara chakra is located at or just above the crown of the head, and is often represented in religious art and iconography as light radiating out of the head or as a halo. Pure white light infused with love and infinite intelligence is characteristic of the energy associated with the crown chakra. This light appears in almost every culture known to man. While few people ever have a direct experience of the union with Divine energy that is the primary purpose of this chakra, all people have a connection to the divine through the crown chakra. Problems at the crown chakra show up emotionally as lack of trust, difficulty finding meaning in life or personal identity, difficulty with spiritual issues, trouble living in the present, and problems finding inspiration or good values. Physical illnesses associated with crown chakra blockages include sensitivity to light and/or sound, chronic exhaustion with no apparent physical cause, diseases of the muscular system, diseases of the skeletal system, and diseases of the skin. One of the best ways to activate and balance the crown chakra is to begin and maintain a regular meditation practice. Prayer is also helpful, and so is the regular practice of yoga. Anything that helps to connect a person to Divine energy will help open the crown chakra and heal illnesses associated with it.

The brow chakra connects each of us to our spiritual energy and governs a person’s ability to see clearly, dream for the future, and express the intuitive side of our nature. Psychic ability, dreamwork, wisdom, and intellectual ability are some of the gifts associated with a well-balanced and open brow chakra. The brow chakra is sometimes called the ‘third eye’ chakra because it is associated with ’second sight’ or ways of knowing not connected directly to the five senses. Problems with blockage or overactivity of the brow chakra can manifest as anxiety, depression, confusion, fear of the truth, an inability to see issues clearly, mental illness, delusion, and emotional difficulties. If problems with the brow chakra are not addressed at the emotional level, they can develop into physical illnesses such as brains tumors, stroke, deafness, blindness, seizures, learning disabilities, spinal disorders, panic disorders, schizophrenia, and major psychiatric depressive episodes. The brow chakra governs the physical organs of the brain, the pituitary glands, the pineal gland, the ears, the eyes, the nose, and the entire neurological system. To balance or open the brow chakra, any activity that involves visualization or sight will be useful. Dream work, which connects the conscious mind with the spiritual unconscious by examining and interpreting dream symbols can also be very useful. To remember dreams, keep a small notebook and a pen beside your bed and write them down the moment you awaken. That discipline alone can sharpen and open the brow chakra.

The throat chakra governs our ability to act authentically in the world around us and to literally ’speak our own truth’. Throat chakra issues show up in problems with honesty and integrity, and problems with willpower. Lying closes up the throat chakra, and persistent blockage of this energy center can even result in laryngitis or medical problems involving the mouth and throat. Everyone is familiar with the expression “a lump in the throat” which describes a common sensation people have when they are overcome with emotion and are unable to express how they truly feel. That feeling is the actually closing up of the throat chakra. Extreme blockages can cause not only laryngitis but mouth ulcers, throat cancer, swollen glands, sore throat, voice problems, gum and tooth decay, and other dental problems. The idea of “losing face” which often manifests in dreams as a loss of teeth (symbolically) is very much a throat chakra issue. Anything that enables a person to speak the truth and be true to him or herself will help to open and heal this energy center. Singing and chanting are especially healing for throat chakra issues. Gargling with salt water, a common cure for physical throat problems, will also help to open the throat chakra. To prevent throat chakra issues, pay attention to how you feel about what you say and do and be honest in all things and true to yourself.
