The seventh and highest of the chakras is located at the crown of the human head or just above it and is called the Sahasrara or crown chakra. Often referred to as the thousand petaled lotus, the crown chakra is the most subtle of all chakras and is the one from which all the other lower chakras emanate. The crown chakra is the chakra associated with pure consciousness and union with the Divine. The crown chakra represents one’s connection with one’s physical or birth father as well as one’s heavenly father. The color associated with the crown chakra is violet, and the element is inner light. Physically the crown chakra relates to the pineal gland, the brain, the top of the head, and the entire nervous system. The crown chakra enables the individual to see him or herself as creating the Universe and being connected to the created Universe. Imbalance in the crown chakra can show up in the physical body as headaches, photosensitivity, mental illness, schizophrenia, confusion, neuralgia, nervous disorders, epilepsy, skin rashes, and coordination problems. Qualities associated with a well-balanced crown chakra are reverence for life, self-sacrifice in the service of others, idealism, and a gift for seeing the appropriate path to growth of the higher self. When chakra energy is triggered during kundalini yoga, the crown chakra is the point at which Divine union occurs. Energy literally rushes up the spine through all seven chakras and exits the body into the Divine through the crown chakra. This experience of union is called samadhi in Sanskrit.

The sixth chakra is located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows. It is known as the brow chakra or third eye center, and in Sanskrit is called the Ajna chakra. The color associated with the third eye chakra is indigo or deep blue, and the element is inner sound: a sound that is not dependent on outside causes. The third eye chakra is concerned with spirituality, psychic ability, the unconscious, ESP, clairvoyance and clairsentience. The part of the body most associated with the third eye chakra is the pituitary gland and anything related the senses. The ability to see things from a higher perspective than one’s ego is relevant to this chakra, as is taking personal responsibility for one’s life and actions. A person with a balanced third eye chakra acknowledges a responsibility to follow the soul’s path, and listens actively to intuitive personal messages from the unconscious and the spirit. These messages are unique to each person and differ from ‘gut’ feelings in that they are true spiritual insights. Imbalance shows up in scattered thinking, difficulty recognizing and following personal intuition, and a lack of consideration for others. Physical symptoms of sixth chakra imbalance include thyroid imbalances, swollen glands, flu and infectious diseases, sleep problems, learning disorders, hyperactivity, and hormonal problems.

The fifth chakra is called the Vishhudda or throat chakra and is located at the throat in the region of the thyroid gland, the gland responsible for growth and maturation. Similarly, the throat chakra is associated with communication and growth, with growth being seen as an evolution in communication. The color associated with the throat chakra is sky blue. The element associated with the throat chakra is ether, a form of matter which bridges the physical and material worlds. Deep inner and outer space are fifth chakra elements. The Vishudda chakra is associated with abundance and the manifestation of personal goals through self expression. It is also associated with intuition and one’s ability to bridge the spiritual and material worlds through creative expression and communication. Problems and blockages in the throat chakra show up in the body as asthma, bronchitis, disorders of the throat and/or mouth, and problems with the upper digestive system. Emotional symptoms of blockage or over-activation include problems with trust and trustworthiness, challenges in being faithful, a lack of tact, coldness, and self-righteousness. A healthy and balanced throat chakra is associated with good self-expression, honesty, trustworthiness, good intuition, and the ability to create what one desires through and effective expression of self. The sense of hearing is also a fifth chakra ability; hearing problems are associated with problems or blockages, strong hearing with balance.
